Tens of thousands of marchers and spectators turned out in the summer sunshine for the Co-op Group-sponsored Durham Miners Gala and, even though were a couple of showers later in the day, this failed to dampen enthusiasm for this 139 year-old event which is going from strength to strength despite the demise of the Durham coalfield.
