Hawthorn Housing Co-operative has officially opened a development of 48 new homes in the Glasgow district of Possilpark.
The development, built on land which has lain derelect for more than 30 years, is an addition to the co-op’s existing stock of 191 refurbished ex-local authority tenements, and 125 properties built by Hawthorn between 1997 and 2014.
Asset manager Peter Kelly said: “The new homes we have provided shows the co-op is achieving its vision of ‘leading the creation of a community with excellent homes where people are proud to live’.”
Chair Helen Graham added: “We are extremely proud of these new homes and the part they play in our long term project for improving the quality of life of this community and the homes they live in.”
The two-storey homes were designed and built by McTaggart Construction, with the £5.65m project funded by a £3.75m in housing association grant from Glasgow City Council and a £1.9m loan from the Bank of Scotland.
Hawthorn is a fully mutual housing co-operative, managed by a voluntary management committee of 15 local residents who employ staff to carry out its day-to-day work.
It was established as a registered social landlord in 1987, after a campaign by local residents to take over the ownership and management of 384 houses from Glasgow City Council.
