A Co-op Group store in the Welsh village of Treorchy has been refurbished following a £1m investment.
Located in Station Road, the 9,000 sq ft store was re-launched on 31 October after an eight-week refit. Among those who attended the official opening was long-standing Co-op member Sylvia Jones who regularly makes the 350 mile round-trip from Treorchy to attend Co-op’s AGM. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers, and a Co-op hamper to donate to a charity of her choice.
The store runs on 100% renewable electricity and includes a bakery, a Costa coffee dispenser and Hermes parcel service, alongside a focus on fresh and chilled products, food-to-go, vegan and free-from foods, beers and wines, and essentials.
To mark the re-launch, the Co-op Group is renovating an outdoor area at the nearby Treorchy Primary School, adding new fencing, artificial turf to enable children to play out-of-doors all year round and a new roof for the pagoda.
Store manager Daryl Hodges said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to make such a significant investment in Treorchy – it has a great look and range and we are receiving really positive feedback. We are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new into their new-look Co-op. Our aim is for the store to operate at the heart of local life, a community hub making a difference locally.”
Regional manager Erin O’Mahony added: “The Co-op is committed to making a difference and creating value in its communities – whether that is through sustaining local jobs, giving back to local causes or, our support for Welsh suppliers and agriculture.
“It is all about delivering what our members and customers want, need and care about, conveniently. We also want our community to know that they can become a co-owner of their Co-op, and that as a member they raise money for local causes every time they swipe their membership card when buying own-brand products.
“The investment in Treorchy is a great way for the Co-op to mark its 175th anniversary year.”
