Co-op’s biggest coffee morning raises £12,000 for cancer charity

Central England Co-operative Funeral Care staff members have raised over £12,000 by hosting dozens of World’s Biggest Coffee Morning events for Macmillan Cancer Support.

As many as 86 of the co-op’s funeral homes and florists took part in the annual fundraising event for the cancer charity – raising £12,626 by selling tea, coffee and cakes.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a fundraising event involving guests gathering over coffee and making a donation to the charity.

Kevin Crute, head of funerals at Central England, said: “By holding events such as these we not only raise money for charity, but also give people the opportunity to see that funeral homes are welcoming and friendly places.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our guests for giving so generously at the coffee mornings and my colleagues for their time and support.”

Macmillan Cancer Support’s fundraising manager for Staffordshire, Pauline Lewis, said: “Last year, people getting together over coffee and cake raised a record £27.5m. Thank you for helping us to try and raise even more this year for people affected by cancer.”

Central England Co-op employs over 8,000 staff, with projected gross sales of £958m for 2016/17.

It has over 400 trading outlets across the UK, making it one of the largest independent retailers. Its principal areas of activity are food, funeral services and property.

The society was recently named Leading Co-operative of the Year 2016 by Co-operatives UK.
