Co-op Group members pull a £15m Christmas cracker

An estimated £15m is expected to be distributed to members this month, following the launch of the Co-op Group’s new membership proposition at the end of September.

The retailer expects members to have earned more than £15m through its new membership scheme by the end of the December. Members receive a 5% reward when they purchase own-branded products and services, which can be accumulated or spent instantly – and shoppers are likely to use this in the run up to Christmas, said the Group.

An additional 1% is donated to local good causes under the scheme, which is currently benefiting more than 4,000 community groups across the UK.

“Millions of pounds will be divvied-up between shoppers and good causes,” said Steve Murrells, retail chief executive at the Co-op Group. “Members will save money by using their rewards to contribute to the cost of Christmas. And shoppers aren’t the only ones who benefit as local community groups also receive a Christmas cheer as the reward scheme ensures they get a share.

“Good food really can do good with around £3m raised by the end of the year to provide a funding boost for over 4,000 local causes.”

The Co-op Group has also launched a multi-million pound ‘Swipe and Win’ scheme where customers can not only win for themselves but also gain for their local community.

Members who swipe their cards between 13 and 24 December will be in the running for festive instant-win prizes, two of which are available to win every day from Co-op Group food stores.

Every time they swipe their membership card, they could win £5,000 in cash as well as £1,000 for a charity of their choice. Customers should check their receipt to see if they’ve won one of the 24 prices, worth almost £1.5m in total.
