In the run-up to the World Cup, the Southern Co-op raised over £3,800 for local hospice, Naomi House and Jacksplace.
The retailer hosted a charity football tournament on 12 June, with the tournament taking place at Goals, a five-a-side football centre in Portsmouth.
The society has been supporting the hospice since 2017 when Naomi House and Jacksplace became its Love Your Neighbourhood charity partner.
Organiser and Southern Co-op colleagu, Lee Cook said: “I am absolutely delighted about how much money we have raised. Each of the ten teams of colleagues had been set a target of £250 to raise so to exceed the total by over £1,000 was a fantastic achievement. I feel very proud that the money is going to Naomi House and Jacksplace, which is such an important place for local children and young people.
“The day itself couldn’t have gone any better; everyone had a great time and the football was played in a really good spirit.”
Naomi House and Jacksplace provides expert hospice care to more than 325 life-limited and life-threatened children, young people, and their expended families. The hospice depends of donations, with only 9% of its income coming from government and statutory sources.
The Love Your Neighbourhood initiative forms part of Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme. The project is focused on four social themes for promoting greener, healthier, safer and more inclusive neighbourhoods.
The scheme is funded through the 5p single-use carrier bag levy. Charities and community groups which work to address one of the four teams can apply for cash donations between £50 and £1,000 and small donations of good through the Goods in Kind project.
