Marking World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing announced Alzheimer’s Research UK as its new members’ charity.
Every two years, the housing co-op chooses a new charity to support. As part of the process, members nominate their favourite charities, which are then shortlisted by tenants and employees on the RBH community-funding panel.
At their annual meeting on 11 September, members chose Alzheimer’s Research UK, which focuses on prevention, treatment and cure of the condition, as well as raising awareness of dementia.
Previous RBH members’ charities include Rochdale & District Mind and Springhill Hospice. RBH raised over £13,000 for Rochdale & District Mind between 2016 and 2018.
Sue Kershaw, RBH membership manager, said: “With so many fantastic charities shortlisted, it was a really difficult decision for our members. We’re delighted to be able to start our new adventure with Alzheimer’s Research UK, and we’re looking forward to raising lots of money for such a fantastic cause, and hopefully having some fun along the way.”
Jess Sayer, regional fundraising manager at Alzheimer’s Research UK, added: “We’re delighted RBH has chosen to support Alzheimer’s Research UK and we can’t wait to get our partnership started.
“Our cause is clearly one that resonated with members, which is no surprise, as one in three of us know someone living with dementia today. But with the support of RBH, we will be able to make breakthroughs possible and bring about the life-changing treatments we desperately need for this condition.”
Alzheimer’s UK aims to develop the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025 by helping to understand the disease, diagnose people earlier, reduce risk and treat it effectively.
