Midcounties Co-operative marked Remembrance Day with a range of activities commemorating the region’s war heroes.
Pupils at schools in Oxfordshire, the West Midlands and Warwickshire took part in poppy design competition, knitting, drawing, painting and sewing their creations which were displayed at local Co-op Food stores to be judged by a panel.
The winner was Shrubland Street Community Primary School, which won £500 to spend on history resources.
Meanwhile, colleagues at the society held a fundraising event for the British Legion. They also laid wreaths at their head office in Warwick and at war memorials across the country. And staff planted poppy flower seeds in parks and green spaces in the local area and donated seeds to local schools.
Melissa Goddard at Shrubland Street Community Primary School said: “The competition was a really fun way of teaching pupils the important symbolism of the poppy. The children loved seeing their artwork on display at the Leamington Food Store.
“We’d like to thank Midcounties for the prize money, which we’ll use to provide our pupils with even more resources to learn about those pivotal periods of our history.”
Marnie Richards, developing young people co-ordinator at Midcounties, said: “This Remembrance Sunday was particularly special as it marked 100 years since the end of the First World War.
“At Midcounties, we’re committed to supporting the community. We had a really positive response from all of the schools that took part and it was great to see the children taking the opportunity to find out more about local heroes and the region’s history.”
