Abcul names Robert Kelly as its new chief executive

Mr Kelly, current CEO of the NHS Credit Union and former Abcul president, takes over from Mark Lyonette

The Association of British Credit Unions (Abcul) has appointed Robert Kelly as its new chief executive, replacing Mark Lyonette who stood down in May.

Mr Kelly, a former president of Abcul who has worked in the sector since 2003, takes up the role later this year.

He is currently serving as chief executive of the NHS Credit Union, where he has overseen a major expansion of operations with the credit union growing by more than 400%.

Abcul says Mr Kelly has gained extensive knowledge of its governance, operation and networks through his long service as an elected director, and on various regulatory and policy-making committees.

Karen Bennett, Abcul president, said: “The Abcul board is thrilled to appoint a new chief executive with Robert’s talent, skills and experience.  He brings enormous knowledge of the sector, its challenges and the role of the Association in enabling our members to rise to them.

“He has a vision for the future of Abcul and for the credit union movement at large which the board and I fully support.

“We can’t wait to welcome Robert to the role later in the year and to work together closely for the greater good of our member credit unions and the people and communities they serve. This is an exciting time for the credit union movement with our mission having never been so relevant.”

Mr Kelly said: “It is a great privilege to have been appointed to this hugely important position at a time of great change and opportunity for the credit union movement.  I am firmly committed to the co-operative values which mark out the credit union model within UK financial services and which are at the heart of Abcul – our members’ association.

“By working together through Abcul, credit unions achieve more than they could alone and I can’t wait to lead the association in adding value to our members and, by extension, society. I know I take the helm of a committed staff and board team dedicated to delivering for members every day.”
