Central England Co-op store in Birmingham targeted by robbers

Two men sprayed an unknown substance on two Central England Co-op employees

Police are on the search for two men who attempted to rob a Central England Co-op store in Birmingham on 4 September.

The incident took place at 2:30 pm when the two tried to steal products from the store but were challenged by staff. They responded by spraying an unknown substance on two Central England Co-op employees.

Emergency services arriving at the scene shortly after the attack to treat those affected. The substance used was non-harmful and the response was a precaution.

A spokesperson for Central England Co-operative said: “We can confirm that an incident took place on Wednesday 4 September in our store in Northfield.

“As a result, two colleagues were injured and were treated by paramedics at the scene. The store is now open and we are giving our full support to the police as they conduct their investigation.”

West Midlands Police said they were investigating the attack at store on West Heath Road.

A spokesperson said: “The staff workers were sprayed with a substance, which is believed to be non-corrosive, after they challenged two people who were attempting to steal items from the store. They were treated by paramedics at the scene but fortunately are not seriously injured.
