The Central England Co-operative received an award from the Carbon Trust for its efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
The society picked up the Best in Water Management award during a presentation at the Carbon Trust Summit in London.
Luke Olly, the co-op’s energy and environment lead, said: “We are so proud of this achievement because it really showcases our ongoing efforts to improve our sustainability credentials and also reflects our commitment to reduce our water footprint.
“We are pleased the Carbon Trust has recognised our water management efforts which are helping us achieve our environmental goals.”
The Carbon Trust helps governments, businesses and organisations reduce their carbon emissions and become more resource-efficient.
Since 2010, Central England has reduced its total carbon footprint by 48% and installed LED lighting across hundred of food stores and petrol stations.
Hugh Jones, managing director of business services at the Carbon Trust, said: “Central England Co-operative has shown an impressive dedication to reducing environmental impacts over a long time period, which this year has led to demonstrating the best overall performance on operational water management amongst all organisations that hold the Carbon Trust Standard for Water.
“An effective approach to maintenance and investment into water reduction technologies have both contributed to their excellent performance and achieving this award.”
