Two colleagues from the Channel Islands Co-operative were named Ambassadors of the Year for their work supporting EYECAN, a charity which supports local people with sight impairment.
Joaquim Santos and James Birch have been volunteering their time to EYECAN and, in recognition of their work, their co-op gave them each a cheque for £250 each, a bottle of champagne and a cheque for £1,000 for EYECAN.
Mr Santos has been working with EYECAN for two years, offering his services at its day centre on his day off. He has also helping the charity – one of the oldest on Jersey – with interpretation and translation.
Mr Birch, who is visually impaired, raised £1,700 for EYECAN by running two quiz nights.
Jane Vincent, EYECAN operations director, said: “Joaquim has been very hands on at our day centre and our clients took to him straight away. His ability to communicate with people from all walks of life and his caring manner shines through in every aspect of his work.
“James has helped with the very necessary fund-raising side of the charity’s work. The quizzes he has organised and managed have become so popular we will need a bigger venue next year.
“The money which the Channel Island Co-operative Society has donated will be used to purchase equipment which we will lend out to sight-impaired islanders to assist them in their day-to-day living.
“Thank you Joaquim and James for all your work. We could not run EYECAN without dedicated people like you.”
