Co-op Group plans store on new housing development in Chelmsford

 The Co-op Group is planning to open a new store serving a new housing development in Chelmsford.

The retailer has applied for a new premises licence for a store on the corner of Marconi Street and New Street – in a building currently used as a marketing office for Bellway, developer of the £500m homes and business complex.

The site, close to the city centre and railway station, lies in the trading area of independent co-operative society Chelmsford Star.

The Group has asked for licensing permission to sell alcohol every day during its opening hours between 6am and 11pm, and will also need change of use permission.

The 2,500 sq ft store is expected to create 15 new jobs.

A Group spokesperson said: “We are looking to open a new Co-op store in Chelmsford on the corner of Marconi Street and New Street, towards the end of the year.

“We believe that a new store, which will have a focus on fresh, healthy foods and essentials, will greatly improve the shopping options for residents.

“It will also create a number of new full and part time jobs which will be targeted at people living in the area.”
