Co-op Switzerland acquires Siroop to expand its online marketplace

The retailer hopes to create a comprehensive non-food platform to take on Amazon

Swiss retailer Coop is looking to consolidate its online sales channel with the acquisition of online marketplace Siroop.

The co-op launched Siroop in 2016 as a joint venture with Swisscom. In April Coop announced that it was acquiring the Swisscom’s 50% stake in the business. The retailer intends to integrate Siroop into its own online sales platform, Microspot, under a single brand.

A Coop spokeswoman said: “We want to successfully transfer Siroop with its customers, dealers, technology and employees to Microspot in the coming months and expand Microspot into a comprehensive non-food platform.

“Microspot is well-known in Switzerland for low prices and fast delivery and will use its efficient processes to offer customers non-food products at the best prices in the future.”

Microspot has been used to sell home electronics. The retailer intends to use the platform to sell other products as well and take on the likes of Amazon. The country’s largest online retailer is Digitec-Galaxus, a subsidiary of co-operative Migros.

Siroop offers more than one million products from over 500 online retailers with free returns. Customers ordering products over CH50 also benefit from free delivery.
