Coop Switzerland opens its first vegetarian supermarket to meet growing demand

The Karma store offers freshly prepared meals, bulk produce and non-food vegan goods as well as a seated coffee bar

Coop Switzerland has launched its first store devoted solely to vegetarian and vegan products.

The Karma store, based at Zug station near Zurich, offers fresh produce, basic food items, vegan and vegetarian cosmetics, freshly prepared beverages, nuts, cereals, and a range of convenience products.

The co-op says the venture is a response to strong consumer demand and is also designed to improve its expertise in vegetarian retail, and is clearly distinguished from existing formats such as Coop to go, Zopf & Zöpfli and Marché Express.

The store offers freshly prepared meals

Goods include homemade products from the well-known brand Karma; vegetarian items and vegan Naturaplan and Delicorn; and fashionable brands, including a fine selection of Veganz products. About one third of food products are organic or certified Max Havelaar.

Every week, a new recipe from food database Fooby is available in stores, with the ingredients stocked close by.

Many products, including quinoa, muesli and nuts, will be offered in bulk, allowing customers to buy the exact quantity they need, cutting down on food waste.

Non-food items such as writing materials, cards and vegan cosmetics complete the offer, and there is a tea and coffee bar with a seating area, and freshly prepared meals on offer throughout the day.

Last year, Coop Switzerland increased its range of vegetarian and vegan products.
