Lambeth GP Food Co-op is launching a Seeds for Life project to encourage people to grow food at home.
The co-op, run by patients, doctors, nurses and Lambeth residents, has been working on food growing and distribution projects to improve health and wellbeing since 2013. It has created vegetable growing gardens at GP surgeries across the borough.
Now, as the Covid-19 crisis increases the risks of isolation and food insecurity, the co-op wants to “provide some relief … by the small yet effective act of enabling people to grow food”.
Seeds for Life will see the co-op distribute a gardening kit, containing a free packet of seeds, a simple recipe, growing instructions and helpful hints, to as many as possible of the 4-6,000 vulnerable people in the borough.
It said: “During the lockdown, many older Lambeth residents managing long term health conditions including diabetes, arthritis, heart conditions and low mood could benefit from becoming actively involved in growing plants at home.
“This project contributes to supporting personal and community resilience, enhancing self-care and raising older peoples ability to self manage in challenging circumstances.”
