A Central England Co-operative store in Scraptoft was ram-raided in the early hours of Sunday, 14 July. Significant damage was caused to the building but in the end the gang left the scene empty handed.
Police were called to the store just before 4.20am after a JCB telehandler was driven into the front of the co-op shop with the aim of entering a cash machine.
A spokesman from Central England said: “Our store in Main Street, Scraptoft remains closed this morning following an attempted ATm theft on Sunday morning.
No colleagues or customers were injured during the incident.
“We are hopeful that the store will reopen later today and would like to thank customers for their patience.”

The initial police enquiries suggest three vehicles were used by the suspects, including the JCB, which was left at the scene along with a white Toyota Hilux 4×4. A police statement said the suspects may have ran off in a white or grey large Audi car, possibly a S4 or S5. The detectives believe the JCB may have been stolen from the Barkbythorpe area prior to the incident.
Police are appealing for witnesses who have not spoken to officers yet to come forward with information. Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 2854 Matthew Garside on 101, quoting crime number 19*366780.
