The Co-operative Childcare has launched a series of picturebooks designed to teach children the values of co-operation.
The Little Pioneers is a set of five picturebooks featuring five characters who have different backgrounds. Ping, Charlie, Ella, Alice and Ebo are aged between three and five and represent co-operative values of democracy, openness, equality, social responsibility and co-operation.
Each book focuses on one character, depicting a day in their life at the nursery. The little pioneers work together to overcome obstacles, show they care, include everyone and make a difference in the world.
The books, written and drawn by Pippa and Joel Pixley were designed for children of pre-school reading age (3-5) and include bold and colourful illustration. Ms Pixley has experience as an author and illustrative artist and has led projects at many nurseries, children’s centres and primary schools.
Together with her husband, she has created over 30 storybooks, pop-ups & practitioner handbooks, including the Harmony the Honey Bee series and The Toad Lane Time Travellers.
The authors worked with children and colleagues from the five Co-operative Childcare nurseries to create the set of Little Pioneers storybooks. Ms Pixley gathered these ideas and incorporated them into the narrative.
