Scotmid Co-operative appears in the new Edinburgh edition of the Monopoly board game, launched this month to mark 20 years since the Scottish capital became the first city outside of London to get its own board.
As the city’s oldest retailer, Scotmid appears in the game as a Community Chest card. The new edition also features Edinburgh Castle in the top space – taken by Mayfair in the original game. And Arthur’s Seat, in the city’s Holyrood Park, takes the least expensive space, traditionally filled by Old Kent Road.
Winning Moves UK, which makes the Monopoly board under licence from owners Hasbro, said they struggled to find the cheapest square because it was felt Edinburgh was “too posh”– and Arthur’s Seat was chosen because it fits with the “old” theme of the iconic space.
Other landmarks include Edinburgh Zoo, the university, the Scottish Parliament and sports stadia Tynecastle Park, Easter Road and Murrayfield.
Scotmid chief executive John Brodie said: “Scotmid are delighted to be part of such an iconic game and it is fitting that we are included as we’ve been part of the Edinburgh landscape since 1859.”
Benjamin Thompson, custom games manager at Winning Moves UK, said: “The game features the great and the good of Edinburgh and is a love letter to Scotland’s capital city.”
