Scotmid helps mark 70 years of Golden Wonder

The co-op helped launch a new product, Chippies, at its store close to the local brand’s birthplace

Scottish retail co-op Scotmid has helped British food company Golden Wonder mark its 70th anniversary with a new product launch. Golden Wonder Chippies were unveiled at the Scotmid food store in Stockbridge – close to where the iconic crisp brand was created seven decades ago.

In 1947, Stockbridge baker, William Alexander, started making crisps after he’d finished baking for the day, naming them after the Golden Wonder potato variety.

“Golden Wonder is a well-loved and iconic brand that started in Stockbridge 70 years ago and Chippies are the next chapter in our story,” said Matt Smith, marketing director for Golden Wonder.

“With their punchy, chip-shop inspired flavours, Chippies really deliver the fully flavoured taste that Golden Wonder is famous for. We are very excited to be officially launching Chippies at Golden Wonder’s birthplace.”

Stephen Brown, Scotmid’s local sourcing manager, said the co-operative was “proud to host Golden Wonder’s 70th birthday celebrations where the success story started in 1947″.

He added: “Not many people know that Golden Wonder, like Scotmid, started off in Edinburgh before expanding further afield. It’s brilliant to be able to celebrate the brand’s heritage.

“Generations of Scots have grown up eating Golden Wonder crisps and they are a truly iconic brand. Like Scotmid, they are very much an intrinsic part of the Scottish landscape.”
