Scotmid Co-operative stores and customers across Scotland have raised an astonishing £345,000 for Childline, funding approximately 85,000 counselling sessions for children and young people.
This follows a year-long partnership with the NSPCC-run charity, which offers confidential advice to children who need someone to listen to them.
The society beat its fundraising target by 15%, with stores holding activities such as dress-down days, raffles, skydives, triathlons and long-distance bike rides.
Elaine Chalmers, head of Childline in Scotland, joined Scotmid colleagues – including those from Semichem, Lakes & Dales Co-operative and Scotmid Co-operative Funeral Directors – and CEO John Brodie at an event in Edinburgh to celebrate.
Childline provides vital free and confidential support 24/7 to desperate children and young people over the phone and online. As part of the partnership, Scotmid also actively promoted ways that staff and customers can volunteer for the helpline to counsel children and young people on a range of topics including mental health issues, family problems, body image, bullying and abuse.
Ms Chalmers said: “The enthusiasm and sheer hard work of the Scotmid family has been overwhelming. Childline volunteers and staff are proud to be associated with this effort.
“Those young people who use the service will benefit from this amazing achievement. On behalf of us all we send a huge thank you for what has been an incredible response to the needs of young people across the country.”
Scotmid chief executive John Brodie added: “Childline is such a valuable service for children and young people in our communities so we are absolutely delighted to have partnered with the charity and surpass our fundraising target.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our generous colleagues, members and customers for their continued support throughout the year – as a co-operative this is something we are very proud of and hope will make a huge difference to the lives of those using the service.”
Childline founder Dame Ester Rantzen contratulated the team via a video message, saying: “I have had the great pleasure of meeting the Scotmid team and I was enormously impressed by their vision, passion and commitment to the welfare of children.
“Childline helps and protects young people who have nowhere else to turn and we know we save lives and protect them from pain but our challenge is to answer every child who needs us.
“The wonderful donation from Scotmid staff and customers means that we will be able to support many more children in the future on their behalf. Thank you Scotmid.”
