UK tech co-op Code-Operative is to develop an app for ACORN union that alerts fellow members when a user is facing an emergency.
ACORN is a national community-based, direct-action union that works like a trade union, but for people in communities instead of the workplace. It has won campaigns against international banks and local authorities – and wants a greater presence in local communities so it can take action to protect its members.
It has launched £10,000 crowdfunder to develop, test and launch the app, which is says “could help save people from violent and traumatic situations”.
The crowdfunding page adds: “This is how it would work: If a member is experiencing an emergency – being harassed in the street or threatened by their landlord – they can open the Acorn Red Alert app and hit the emergency button.
“The app alerts other members to the emergency situation and broadcasts the location of where help is needed. Members responding to the emergency can also broadcast their location to show that the union is on its way.”
Any money raised above the £10,000 target will go towards the ongoing costs of maintaining and improving it. Supporters will receive a number of rewards, including pin badges and free prize draw raffle tickets for a luxury hamper.
“This app could really help change people’s lives – giving power to the powerless,” says Acorn member Rohan Natashka Kon on the crowdfunding page. “If we want a louder voice and a fairer share, then we need to work together to get what we deserve. We’re not just asking for donations – this is about showing real solidarity with people in need.”
Code-Operative is a freelance co-op based in the north-east of England, and is a member of the Co Tech network.
